Moving Home During The Festive Period

Moving Home During The Festive Period

Lots of homeowners start putting their Christmas decorations up at the beginning of December, but if you’re moving home this festive season, Christmas decorations are probably the last thing on your mind. Moving home can be stressful at any time of the year and if you have the added pressure of Christmas being just around the corner, you will understandably be stressed about ensuring everything goes smoothly on moving day. Moving Home During The Festive Period

If you’re moving home in December or early January, our team at Moving Home Made Easy is here to help. Below we have put together a list of useful and practical tips that can help to make your house move easy and stress-free.

Create A Moving Checklist

Organisation is key when you’re moving during the festive period and one of the best things you can do is create a moving checklist. This checklist will help to ensure you’re not forgetting anything important at this very busy time of the year and you can have peace of mind that you’ve done everything you need to for your move. To help you out, our team has put together a comprehensive moving checklist, so you don’t need to search the internet for one

Enlist The Help Of Some Experts

Instead of relying on family and friends to help you with your move, it’s highly recommended that you book professional removal services. A team of expert movers can make moving day much less stressful and they will work with you to ensure everything is carefully transported from A to B. Lots of moving companies offer packing and unpacking services, and these are very popular around Christmas time. These extra removal services will prevent you from having to live out of cardboard boxes for weeks and help you to settle into your new home.

Buy, Wrap And Pack Presents In Advance

Even if you’re moving a few weeks before Christmas day, we would still advise that you have all of your Christmas presents wrapped prior to your move. Being prepared with Christmas presents will give you one less thing to worry about and you won’t have the hassle of trying to hide things during your move, especially if you have children. Ideally, you should put all of your wrapped Christmas presents into moving boxes and clearly label them, they will then be handled with care and not get lost amongst all of your other belongings.

An added tip is to send your Christmas cards out early too. Post them before you move into your new home and include a note with your new address inside each card. This is a quick and easy way to tell all of your family and friends what your new address is.

Pre-Plan Your Broadband Installation

WiFi is considered to be essential nowadays and it’s something you’re likely to need when you move into a new home, particularly if you video call family and friends over the festive season. December is a busy month for all businesses and to prevent disappointment, you should book your broadband installation in advance. Once you know your moving date, do some research into broadband deals and speak to the company you’d like to install your internet connection.

Arrange A Grocery Delivery

When you’re entertaining family and friends this Christmas time or planning a housewarming party soon after your move, it can be beneficial to organise for shopping to be delivered to your new home. Supermarket opening times can differ a lot over the festive period with various bank holidays and if you want your cupboards to be stocked up ready to welcome visitors, a grocery delivery will prevent the stress of trying to get to a shop and buy everything you need.

After A Move Tips For Being Organised

Unpacking After A Move Tips For Being Organised

After A Move Tips For Being Organised  move requires just as much effort as the packing beforehand, but it’s well worth it as it’s a great time to create a wonderful space to become your new family home.

So fear not! We’ve got several tips to help you figure out how to unpack after a move, how to keep your unpacking process stress-free and help you get organised and settle in quickly at your new home…

TOP TIPS FOR UNPACKING AFTER A MOVE

1. Walkthrough your house with your removal company before they leave

Before you start unpacking make sure to do a walkthrough with the removals company crew leader before they leave.

Check if everything is in the place you want it, that nothing obvious is missing and have them double check everything is unloaded from the back of the van. Ask them to take away any packing materials that you’ve already unpacked with them if you have them available before they depart.

Check to ensure everything has arrived intact

Accidents can happen so it’s important to check all your packages, especially valuable items quickly to ensure they have arrived in the same condition they left. Most insurance policies will have a time limit for notification of claims, for example 7 days from delivery. If you discover any damage take photos and make sure to keep hold of the item in case it has to be inspected.

2. Where to start with unpacking? Get the basics set up first.

If you packed an essentials box and loaded this last then now is a great time to unpack it.

Kitchen

First up get a basic kitchen set up to help keep you fed and watered. Kettle, cups and teabags, cutlery and plates for that first night take away!

Cleaning

Once you’ve got a simple kitchen set up unpack your basic cleaning kit. This means you can quickly clean any areas you need to before unpacking your essentials in (giving kitchen cabinets a wipe out for example).

Bedtime basics

Next up get the basics set up for sleep. Assemble the beds, get the bedding on and find your toothbrush and pyjamas so you can quickly collapse at the end of what has likely been a long day.

3. Move on to tackle one room at a time

Once you’ve unpacked the basics it’s a good idea to work on a room at a time, starting with the rooms you want to use most quickly, for example setting up a comfortable living room or dining area.

You don’t have to unpack everything, but set it up to the extent you can use it for the first few days. Everything else that’s not needed urgently can stay boxed until you’ve decided exactly how you want to arrange the furniture or whether any decorating is required.

Flat pack your boxes once empty and get rid of the used packing material as you go to give you more space.

TOP TIP: The key to good unpacking, is good packing – clear labelling, decluttering before the move and making a plan of where you’d like each item to go so the movers can unload into the right room can really help you get a head start.

4. Think about the children

Moving is an unsettling time for children in particular so make sure unpacking their bedrooms takes priority over yours to help them settle in quickly.

Let older kids get started with unpacking their own bedrooms if they want to or give younger ones some choice in where their favourite items might go in their room.

If you can, try and keep to their normal bedtimes. If you can’t, then perhaps think about leaving them with friends or family for the day/night and getting their rooms set up with beds and toys first thing the next day so it’s all ready for their return. Our articles on moving house with children explain more about how to keep moving day as stress-free as possible for them.

5. Set up the bathroom when you can

Much like the kitchen, the bathroom will be a room required by each member of the family almost immediately.

Make sure you keep some fresh towels and toiletries in your essentials box so that people can use the shower or bath straight away – and don’t forget things like toothpaste, toothbrushes and toilet paper!

6. Dispose of packing materials as you go

A great tip for being organised when unpacking is to dispose of each box as it’s emptied.

Flatten them down and keep them out of the way – not only does it create more space and make it feel like you’re making progress, but it also prevents you from re-filling it with other things that you’ll just have to unpack again later!

7. Don’t rush unpacking

The key to being organised when unpacking after a move is, simply, to take your time.

Once all of your essentials are up and running and you can eat, sleep and wash, the rest can be done at your own pace. Always leave things like books, pictures and ornaments until last, just in case you have to redecorate and things need to be moved all over again.

If your boxes are clearly labelled then you shouldn’t have any trouble finding what you need when you need it, and can enjoy organising your new house and finding just the right place for all of your things!

How To Pack Folded Clothes

How To Pack Folded Clothes

If you’re moving house and handling your own packing then some items – like your clothes – can be particularly tricky. Here we show you what packing materials you will need and how to pack folded clothes in order to make sure they are well protected during your move.

What you will need: Box, packing paper, tape, marker pen.

Start by constructing your box. Tape one corner down for easy access whilst packing and line the bottom with a few sheets of packing paper. Make sure the box is lined all the way around and that the paper overhangs across each side of the box. This will be important later on.

Transfer folded clothes straight from your drawers into the box.

Once the box is full, place a couple of sheets of packing paper over the top of the clothes, then cover that with the paper sheets you lined the box with earlier. Tape the box up securely and label it clearly.

Pack Plates And Bowls When Moving House

Pack Plates And Bowls When Moving House

If you’re moving house and handling your own packing, then some items like china plates and bowls can be tricky. Here we show you what packing materials you will need and how to pack plates and bowls to make sure they are well protected during your move...Pack Plates And Bowls When Moving House

HOW TO PACK PLATES AND BOWLS FOR MOVING HOUSE

To pack your plates and bowls sufficiently to protect them during a house move you will need:

  • packing paper
  • packing tape
  • marker pen

Take a look at our guide to packing boxes and materials to find out more about which boxes you’ll need for loading your plates and bowls alongside the rest of your kitchen items.

Instructions

  1. Start by stacking your packing paper neatly on top of your packing station, which should be flat, stable and around waist height.
  2. Take the first plate and place it to one side of the paper. Fold one sheet of your packing paper over the top, then place the next plate on top.
  3. Fold another sheet over this plate, then place another plate on top of that.
  4. Repeat the process until you have a stack of around 4 plates.
  5. Tuck the paper neatly around the plates so that they form a bundle, turn them over, then take a couple of separate sheets of paper and wrap again.
  6. You should end up with a neat, compact bundle of plates that are well protected.
  7. When placing inside the box, ensure they are stacked on their side – this will minimise any impact damage should the box be accidentally dropped or knocked in transit.
  8. Mark your box as ‘fragile’ and indicate that the contents include plates or items of china so that a) your removal crew are fully aware of the contents when loading the truck and b) it’ll be much easier for you to unpack when you get into your new home as you’ll know what’s inside the box.

The Best Time To Book A Removal Company

The Best Time To Book A Removal Company

Things You Need To Know About Hiring Removal Companies For Your Move

Several removal companies in Australia offer house and office removals. However, the struggle is in finding a reliable company that can help you with packing, moving, to unpacking your items.

When hiring a removalist, it is important to go through a list of considerations such as:

  1. List of Services – Before booking a move, it is important to consider a removal company that offers other services needed for a hassle-free move from packing, temporary storage, moving boxes and packing supplies, and unpacking.
  1. Geographical Service Areas – The geographical scope can also be another factor when hiring a removalist. If you are just moving house within the same city then you can book for local removal services. However, if you are transferring to a location away from the metro due, then consider hiring a removal company that offers regional or interstate moving services.
  1. Removalist Cost and Payment Options – Before you make a final decision, check how much a removalist costs in your area or find out what the average removalist cost is after you compare their prices. It may also be helpful to know the accepted mode of payment.
  1. Items That Can Be Included – Some removalists may exclude certain items such as your valuables, oversized items, luxury items, flammable or liquid materials, etc. It’s important to learn more about these details so you won’t end up frustrated when they reject some items.
  1. Packing Supplies and Available Moving Boxes – Looking elsewhere for moving boxes or packing supplies can add to your stress and eat up more time. A removal company that also offers these items is something you should look for.
  1. Extra and/or Temporary Storage – In some cases, your new house location may have a smaller space and may need you to keep some of your items elsewhere. Consider hiring removalists that can offer temporary storage may it be for short-term or long-term use.
  1. Insurance Coverage – Before you set the date for your move, make sure that the removal company not just offers quick delivery and moving but also insurance coverage in case your items get damaged or lost.
  1. Removal Policies (Delays, Complaints, etc) – Too many unreasonable removal policies plus long turnaround times to resolve complaints, can be a good indication of not hiring a particular removalist. Look for removal companies with clear and reasonable policies that offer a prompt resolution for complaints or other customer concerns.
  1. Accessible Customer Support – Another consideration is how easily you can contact the removal company by phone, email, chat, or social channels. Are they also responding when answering queries about removal costs, hourly rates, dos and donts etc? Knowing that you can easily talk to someone also gives you the confidence to hire a specific removalist.
  1. Trustworthiness Through Social Proof – When you start looking for a removalist in Brisbane or Gold Coast for example, do you see an impressive star rating in Google or other local listings? Do customers happily share feedback about their move with this company? If so, then it’s a good go signal to book a move with them.

Finding A Removal Company and Why It’s Best To Book Early

After you have all the details when it comes to cost, including services, policies, service areas, reviews and ratings, and other considerations, it’s time to make a decision. Once you have a removalist in mind, it is best to book your move early. Two-week preparation can be enough if you are only moving house with a few items and will be relocating within the same metro area. A two to a month-long preparation may be necessary if you are moving for a regional or interstate move or if you have a lot of items to bring.

Why It’s Important To Find The Best Removals Company For Your Needs

Having a trustworthy and reliable removals company gives you confidence before, during, and after the move. Knowing that all your items are expertly packed and handled, you can simply relax until the move is completed. A removal company with years of experience in local, regional, or interstate moving and also knows how to pack and unpack your items can be the ideal choice.

Why Booking Early Could Save You Money On The Day Of The Move

Booking your move in advance gives you more options when it comes to logistics trucks and the number of movers available. Checking for the best dates can also have better rates, such as booking for a date that falls on a weekday vs a weekend or booking for an off-peak season. Some removalists also offer better rates when you book your move early.

Easily Label Your Moving Boxes Simple Tips

Easily Label Your Moving Boxes Simple Tips

Why should you label moving boxes?

Moving house is one of the most stressful times in life. Imagine how much stress is added if you pack your moving boxes and don’t label them? Looking for your plates so you can eat your first meal in the new house? Yeah, it’s in one of those 40 boxes.

If the thought of this situation fills you with dread, then you are not alone. You can keep your move running smoothly and minimise stress levels. Adding a few extra details when labelling can make moving less anxiety-inducing.

How can you easily label moving boxes?

Organisation is key. Generally, you have more time when packing than you do when unpacking, so take this opportunity to plan ahead and have a system in the weeks or days leading up to the big move. You can simply start packing one room into moving boxes at a time, but that’s not always practical. Packing the non-essentials early is a good place to start. However, this will mean you will have boxes from each room all getting stored together as you progress. So what’s the answer? You want to make the unpacking as streamlined and organised as possible. And for that, you need a system.

Add a packing list to your moving instructions

This is a plan of how you will pack your boxes. Start with items you are not currently using, like clothes for out of season, excess items such as spare towels and bedding, special occasion clothes and dining ware (aka ‘the good china’), and books you’re not currently reading.

Know what’s inside each box

Label each box with the room and what’s in the box. Not only will this help you when you are unpacking, but it will assist the removalist in packing the truck, with the heaviest at the bottom and the fragile at the top.

Categorise the items that go in each box

Keeping similar items together makes sense and can speed up unpacking. For example, kids’ toys – cars, or bedroom – sneakers.

Use colour-coded tape and boxes

To go pro like us when we pack houses, you can also have a colour coding system which makes unpacking a breeze.  Designate a colour for different areas of the home and you’ll know at a glance where to take the box.

Label with name and contact details

Print labels for boxes with your name and contact details so that if there is any mix-up, it is quickly returned to you.

Use packing supplies that are specific to your move

Use the correct size boxes for moving items, such as larger boxes for light items and smaller moving boxes for heavy things. Use original boxes for electronics if you still have them, and sturdy packing tape to keep your items safe.

Take photos of all your items before you move

Taking photos of items before you move is advised to assist with your insurance and the removalist’s insurance if there are any queries at the destination.

What should you exclude when moving?

If using a removalist, request a list of items that they don’t pack or transport. This will usually include things like acids, car batteries, bleach, fireworks, firearms or ammunition (a breach of firearms licences in any event), motor oil, flammable goods such as pool chemicals, gas tanks, and even some nail polishes.

The best advice is to discuss these items with your removalist. They may be able to move them for you but with specific requirements. If in doubt, check it out.

You may want to handle packing and moving expensive, large or sentimental items yourself. For example, expensive artwork, a jewellery collection, electronics such as LCD televisions or computer monitors, valuable collections or sentimental items you can’t chance losing. You can either move them yourself or identify these items with the movers so they can have a box for moving them and specific packing supplies to assist you. For televisions and electronics, movers can assist with this and usually have spare boxes and moving box labels for this specific purpose.

Obvious items to avoid include perishable food, pets, and plants. Pets should be transported by animal movers or stay with you. Plants usually don’t cope well with being stacked with furniture. However, your removalist may be able to accommodate plants if the move is short and they are notified before the date.

Do moving companies also supply boxes, packing materials, and labels?

Most do, and you may be able to purchase them and other packing supplies from your removalist. Some can even supply you with moving box labels personalised to you or provide instructions on creating your own and labelling your boxes when moving.

Are there movers who can pack your things for you?

Absolutely, and it is highly recommended if this is in your budget. The team at All Purpose Removals and Storage are professionally trained to pack items in a way that keeps them safe for travel – and we are also experts at keeping organised and can even unpack at the other end for you. Discuss this option with your removalist to find out how easy it can be for you. You may be surprised by just how little this convenience costs.

Can Move When You Hire A Removalist

Can Move When You Hire A Removalist

There’s stuff everywhere and you’re just wishing you knew where to start. Ain’t moving fun? With the right removalist on your team and a detailed moving items checklist in your hands, you’re well on your way to making an exciting new start. Can Move When You Hire A Removalist

Why do you need to sort items when moving house?

You may think it will be more efficient to sort and declutter your household items when you’re at the unpacking stage, however, that day might not ever come. How many times have you heard your friends or family tell you that they still have unopened boxes from their move months ago?

Ideally, have all your items sorted and organised well before your moving date. This not only saves you money as removalists typically quote on the size of the moving truck required but on moving day, the removalist team can more effectively pack the truck and manoeuvre in and around your items as they will be able to see exactly what is included.

What items can removalists include when you move?

Whether you are moving items interstate or looking for a moving company in Brisbane, your chosen mover can help relocate almost everything with ease. Clothing, indoor and outdoor furniture, electricals, prints and all of your favourite knick-knacks.

What items cannot be moved by removalists?

Whilst the list of items a removalist can assist with is extensive, it is important you are aware of what a moving company will not touch. Typically this includes hazardous materials including but not limited to:

  •  Flammable items
  •  Explosives
  •  Corrosive chemicals
  •  Hazardous materials
  •  Perishable items
  •  Live animals/pets

What can you leave behind when you move house?

The only personal items you should consider leaving behind when you move house are items you’ve discarded in a well-overdue declutter. Other than that, handy items including leftover house paint, owner’s manuals, curtains and fixtures and fittings which form part of your contract of sale must remain in your home.

Do movers require everything in boxes?

It is common to use moving boxes to pack our prized possessions. There are plenty of alternate options including using suitcases with wheels and plastic storage hampers. Remember, not everything needs to be in a box. Removalists will always have plenty of protective blankets to use for large, heavy or bulkier items including your washing machine and dryer, fridge, cabinets and other furniture. Leave these up to the removalist experts.

What to look out for when using a moving company

If you are looking for an affordable mover in Brisbane that will not only safely transport your items affordably but also assist with packing and unpacking, plus provide temporary and long-term storage should that be required, contact All Purpose Removals and Storage.

Relieve yourself of one extra concern on moving day and leverage a team that can provide the necessary boxes and packing materials and guide you on the big day. Armed with a checklist and a reliable moving company, the transition to your new home will be as seamless as possible.

The Complete Guide To Removals

The Complete Guide To Removals

Removal services can vary from local, regional, interstate or inter-country, and international. Some movers can offer specific services only for furniture, plant, rubbish, or home appliance removals while some include them in their main services. There may also be removal types based on seasonality. Other removal services may also include premoval for a house sale, office relocation, commercial storage, packing and unpacking, and moving boxes and supplies. The Complete Guide To Removals

Before you make a final decision and schedule your move, here are some quick tips you can follow:

Have a Checklist of All Items to Include

Sorting items from valuables to those for disposal can help lessen your stress before the day of the move. Make an inventory of items from clothes, fragile items, furniture, appliances, plants, tools, and rubbish.

Have Your Correct and Updated Address Ready

Providing your correct and updated address is essential in terms of considering moving cost, travel distance and duration, and having the right destination for all your belongings.

Learn More About Removalist Costs or Hourly Rates

Some moving companies may have a fixed rate for certain location points while some may apply hourly rates, especially if the move happens locally and will not take so much time. Whatever the case is, it is important to know which cost applies and be ready for it.

Check Removal Coverage Areas and Package Inclusions

If you are moving within the same suburb, you need not struggle much in finding a local removalist as most of them can be found in Google My Business or other listings. Some may also have social media pages you can contact easily. However, when moving interstate or regional, you may have to look for an experienced mover who can travel anywhere within Queensland or Australia.

Learn What Customers Say About Them

Social proof can be a make or break other than pricing. Of course, you want to entrust all your home or office belongings to a moving company that knows how to handle them properly, listens to and understands their customers and has years of experience.

Check Their Terms and Conditions

Some customers end up frustrated upon learning that a moving company will not cover a particular item in the move or will not be liable for any damaged items. Before you have that long face, be sure to read the removal company‘s terms and conditions and they can be agreed on based on your needs.

Pack Your Things and Book Your Move in Advance

Everything done early saves you from all anxiety when you need to move to a new office or house. It is a lot easier for removalists to collect your belongings when you have them prepared in advance. In any event that you cannot attend to packing all your stuff, then you can also count on other movers to do the job for you. This can be a get-and-go process.  Booking your move a month before can also save you moving costs and avoid incurring other fees.

The Bottom Line

Determining who to hire for a house or office removal may entail some considerations in terms of price, service inclusions, customer experience level, and others.
