What to Do With Used Cardboard Boxes?

What to Do With Used Boxes?

There is a profound moment of relief when the last box is finally unloaded. The house has been unpacked, the house move is over, and your new life in your new house can begin. As soon as you breathe that sigh of relief, a new reality set is a mountain of cardboard boxes with no home.

Not only did it take so long to get boxes for moving, but now you have to think up a way to get rid of cardboard boxes. And, for a headache tracking down all of the boxes for a move can entail, it can be a lot tougher to get rid of boxes for moving.

St Albans Removals handled our fair share of cardboard boxes in our day, so here are a few simple hacks for lightening your post-move box load.

How to get rid of boxes after moving

After unpacking after moving house, you’re left with a lot of boxes. So, just throw them away. That’s a pretty easy solution, especially if they won’t be of good second use. If the boxes aren’t in good condition after the move, your best bet is to throw them away with the rest of the rubbish.

For that, you need to tear them down to small pieces and place in a garbage bag (or two). There is no problem to even throw them in the mixed garbage bins, as cardboard decomposes completely for about two months. So, no serious problems with the environment.

If the boxes are in good condition after the move is over, you can always re-purpose them, by giving them to people who might need them.

  • Give away to friends. The best thing you can do is organise a garage sale so everyone can come and see what you’re offering. Your neighbours will be very happy to receive some cardboard boxes. It doesn’t even have to be for moving, people will always find a good use for them. Most of the time if for their pets (usually cats).
  • Give away online. With the era of social media, it’s all too easy to send out a message online, and box seekers will find you. You can offer your boxes as freebies on famous UK websites like Gumtree, Freecycle, Freegle and many more.
  • Give away to colleagues. Another great option is to let people in your office know. If your workplace employs more than 100 people, there will most probably be a colleague that desperately needs your boxes.
  • Give away to charities. We’d wager our weight in cardboard that people from charity organizations would make very good use of cardboard boxes for moving, especially if you still have heavy-duty ones. If these two options don’t get the results you’re after, contact your local charity shops and they’ll be happy to have them.
  • Sell back to the shop. If you bought your pack of boxes from a shop, you might check out if they have a return policy for unused boxes. If you bought more boxes than you needed, you can return the unused ones and get some money in return.
  • Sell on eBay. The easiest option to sell second-hand goods to just about anyone in the world. You need to register and make sure to be obvious to people where you are. If someone from the other side of the globe is interested in your boxes, it would be troublesome.
  • Sell on eBid. This is a UK version of eBay. The interface is similar and uploading your boxes for the whole country to see is easy.
  • Sell on CQOUT. This is an auction website that would accept your offer, but maybe boxes won’t be something people would get hyped in bidding.
  • Sell on Preloved. Another auction website especially for the UK.
  • Sell on Gumtree. Well, Gumtree is not just for freebies. You can use to sell just about anything first and second hand.

No one wants to be in a state of stress just to move. But, if you don’t have the right moving timeline, you will feel just that. The biggest time consumer of packing most likely will be the accumulation of paperwork and memorabilia you will have amassed in your belongings. There is no set way to deal with this, but find a way that works for you to get it all packed.

For starters, knowing your timeline and having the right moving plan in place can avoid any unnecessary stress. You’ll be able to make sure your belongings are protected, you’ll know how to manage your time, and you’ll ensure that your moving company is on the same page as you.

Every week that goes by without you picking up ads further stresses an already stressful time in your life. That time would be better spent on packing and ramping up your search for a new home.

Time to Get Started

There are many other reasons why you should start packing up your home as soon as you know you’re looking for a new home. But the main one is very simple. Whether you’re going to be moving across the country or just a few towns away, the sooner you start packing, the sooner you can call your new home.

The good news is that you can start now – there’s still time to pack your home, but it will take attention and care. The first step of packing is to be realistic about what needs to be moved and what can be left behind. Start with the big stuff like beds and couches – these are the most expensive and are difficult to replace, so it doesn’t make sense to try to move them.

As you start to pack, divide your living space into piles: what can be stored, what needs to be sold, what stays behind and what goes to the new home. And consider storing things rather than selling them – you can always sell them later if you ever need the space.

If you’re like most people, the kitchen is one of the most packed rooms in your home. Use the countertops to store things and the cabinets to store pots and pans. You should also consider hiring professional movers to pack and load.

Have you set aside time for packing?

You will need to take into account the time required to pack before you move. This will require you to plan. This will mean scheduling the times you’ll need to pack, as well as the time you will need to move. If you have a large family and friends, this will be much easier.

Have you set aside financial resources for packing?

As well as scheduling the time to pack, you will also need to consider the financial resources you will need to pack. This means that you will need to set aside a sum of money to cover the costs of hiring a moving company and the costs of purchasing packing supplies.

Have you planned everything?

Packing a moving truck is a lot more difficult than packing a single box. This means that you will have to consider your packing technique. Given the fact that a moving company will often be involved, it’s important to pack everything. Give pointers and a heads-up to experts. This makes things easier for everyone involved.

Once you have a plan, permit yourself to stop stressing about how much you have to do and just enjoy the process. You’re going to be living there, so make it a place you love! You will also encounter a ton of boxes. Make sure you have enough. Don’t be cheap, and don’t be caught off guard.

How To Pack Dishes and Glasses

How To Pack Dishes and Glasses for Moving in One Guide

Packing dishes and glasses before moving house is half of the packing process and many people prefer to do it themselves. If you do it properly, you will not worry about broken expensive plates and glasses during loading or transportation.

In this thorough guide, St Albans Removals explains how to take care of the different types of dishes and glasses by packing them with great care and with the proper materials for the job. Your ceramic plates, stemware, mugs, and glasses will be well protected if you follow the professional packing tips below:

How to pack plates for moving

This simple technique always works and is the most basic method for wrapping a plate with paper. It’s also super easy and comprehensive:

  • Use a flat and solid work surface on which you’ll do the packing.
  • Cover it with packing paper or newspapers.
Get papers wide enough for the plate you’ll be packing. The size is good when there aren’t any parts of the plates left exposed.
  • Put the plate at the centre of the paper sheet and gently fold one of the corners until you cover the whole plate.
  • Then, place another plate on top and cover it with one of the remaining edges.
Do this 4 times until the whole sheet is used to its full potential and all four plates are fully wrapped with the paper.

Best way to pack dishes for long long-distance move

The core principles of successfully packing dishes for a long-distance move have already been described earlier in the post, where we explained how to pack plates in a dish barrel.

A common mistake we see during large-scale moves at longer distances is that some families decide to cut costs on moving boxes. Instead of buying and properly packing a dish barrel with all their plates and glassware, they try to find cheaper, used boxes.

It’s easy to find free moving boxes; however, we do not recommend you do this for a long-distance move. Used moving boxes are often scruffy and worn out to an extent that they may pose a threat to your items. If the bottom fails, you’ll end up with plenty of dishes or glassware broken into tiny pieces. Most certainly, you won’t be able to restore them afterwards and will have to throw them away.

How to pack dishes without a newspaper

If you don’t want to use a newspaper when packing the dishes or any paper at all, that’s fine. Simply look forward to other packing materials such as bubble wrap, which will similarly do the job. There are other alternatives as well, such as:

  • Towels
You can use any towel as long as it fits inside the box, but still leaves enough space for the dishes.
  • Packing tape
Use it for wrapping the dishes with it. It will be a lot harder to remove it than the newspaper, but it is a simple solution if you don’t have any alternative at the moment.
  • Clothing
Underwear and socks are the ultimate replacement for towels. You can use small clothes to fill the gaps in the moving box so the glasses don’t collide inside the cardboard container during transportation and lifting.

How to pack glasses for moving

  • Start with an inspection
Carefully take a look at each piece of glassware before packing it. You can lay down all the glasses you want to pack on a flat surface like a table or a larger bed. Go individually through each glass and take a closer look at any cracks or visible damage on the glass. Put away anything that looks suspicious, as it may cause a lot of issues during the move if it breaks inside.
  • Sort valuable stuff
Anything too expensive should go into a separate moving box. The rest of the glassware, as well as other items such as vases, can be stacked inside the primary box with the glassware.
Take extra care of the most expensive glassware and better transport it to the new address with your vehicle for maximum safety.
  • Wrap the glasses and seal the moving boxes on a flat surface.
Any imperfections due to a lack of comfort during the process may result in broken glassware. Wrap each glass individually with packing paper.
  • Find the most secure way to place the glasses inside the moving boxes, leaving only minimal amounts of free space.
  • Fill the free space with packing paper.
  • Seal the box perfectly with duct tape after finishing the top layer with bubble wrap.
  • Label each box as “fragile”.

Moving companies are there to help you. They are professionals who are paid to move your belongings, and they take their jobs very seriously. They want to make sure that your items are as safe as possible during transit, and they want to make sure that they move your belongings in the most efficient manner possible. Here’s everything you need to know about moving companies, so you can make an informed decision to find the right one. Let’s address a few of the most common moving-company misconceptions that may give you an inaccurate portrayal of how moving companies work. We’re here to counter those myths and help you make the right choices when it comes to hiring a moving company.

Misconception #1: Moving companies are not open 24 hours a day.

Most moving companies have 24-hour phone lines. In addition to being available 24/7, all reputable moving companies have a policy that prohibits charging a customer for after-hours labour. This means that even if you call late at night, you won’t be charged for any extra time your movers spend at your home.

Misconception #2: Your items are insured.

A moving company will indeed ask for a deposit, but that deposit will not be applied to your overall moving costs. In reality, that deposit is a security measure, and it will only be returned to you if there is no damage to your belongings. If you have any items that are already broken or damaged before you move, then those items are not insured by the moving company.

Misconception #3: All moving companies charge the same amount for the same service.

Selecting a moving company is not like going to a restaurant and ordering the same dish. Every moving company has different rates based on their service, quality, and size of the moving crew and trucks.

Misconception #4: Moving companies can be used for long-distance moves only.

When it comes to moving companies, a lot of people seem to think that they can only be used to move people to other cities or states. In reality, moving companies are very versatile. Even if you’re planning on moving locally, it can still make sense to use a moving company. Some plus points are; You’ll get a guaranteed moving price, your items are likely to arrive on time, and your items are likely to be delivered without any incidents! Don’t make the mistake of believing that moving companies are only useful for long-distance moves.

Misconception #5: It’s Easier To Handle The Move Yourself

There are many aspects to consider when planning a move, including packing, loading, unloading, cleaning and unpacking, so you may think you can do it all by yourself. However, it is a good idea to trust the experts when planning a move. Instead of spending countless hours doing the work yourself, you can choose to leave your move to the professional movers. They will come to your house, pack everything and take care of transportation. This way you can spend quality time with your family, friends or colleagues and enjoy the process.

Misconception #6: Home Movers Will Damage Your Possessions

Home movers must complete a pre-job walk-through with you before your move to assess which items can be moved and how they should be packed and moved. Every item will be inventoried, so you can rest assured knowing that nothing will be overlooked and no damage will occur in transit.

Misconception #7:  The Price You Are Given is Fixed

The truth is, there is no such thing as a “fixed price” when it comes to home moving. (Unless you are moving a distance of fewer than 100 miles.) Reasonable rates can vary depending on the distance, size of your home, your destination and other factors. Always ask for a detailed written estimate from your mover before you agree to the price.

Misconception #8: You Don’t Need Insurance

You don’t need insurance for the cost of your moving truck; however, you might want to consider the following: What if something falls off your truck and damages your car? What if you accidentally damage someone else’s property? These instances can be covered in your auto insurance policy, but it is important to make sure that your insurance company offers coverage for commercial vehicles, including moving trucks.

Misconception #9: You Can Move Big and Heavy Items on Your Own

Some moving companies do not allow customers to move big and heavy items on their own, so you might have to hire someone to help you. When attempting to move heavy objects on your own, you might injure yourself or damage your stuff. Instead of risking injury and wasting time, you should hire professional movers that can easily handle big and heavy objects.

Misconception #10: Moving Companies Are All the Same

It’s not uncommon to hear the complaint that movers are all the same. However, that’s simply not true. Like many other industries, many moving companies offer a bad customer experience. Unfortunately, a few bad apples can spoil it for everyone. This can lead to a perception that all movers are the same.

People have been talking about the “spring cleaning” of their homes as an annual occurrence for a long time. If you’re moving this time of the year, you can use it as an opportunity to get a head start on any cleaning you might need to do to get your home ready to sell. But moving weather can be complicated, and keeping safe is always a concern. Weigh your options with a professional moving company like St Albans Removals before you move in the spring.

Many factors contribute to the idea that moving during the spring is the right thing to do. You would be surprised to see how several people make a wise decision to relocate immediately after the winter, once most of the renovation work has been completed. As you can see, the main advantages of moving in the spring are the warmer temperatures and the heavy influx of moving demand that starts once the weather clears up.

So, how can you benefit from this unique opportunity? This is the question you should ask yourself if you are planning to move during the spring. Moving during the spring season offers a wealth of advantages that are all connected to this season as well. Here are the best reasons to start packing your stuff in the winter and moving later in the spring.

GET PROFESSIONAL HELP TO HAVE A SMOOTH AND EASY MOVE

First of all, spring is a time when the weather is quite pleasant – it’s neither too cold nor too hot, and it’s not raining or snowing. It’s in fact, the perfect season for moving if you want to enjoy the best weather and not be affected by the nasty cold or the unbearable heat.

Spring is also a season when there are fewer people around. It’s not that people are absent from the streets; it’s just that it’s a season when many either vacation or simply choose to stay indoors and do little moving of their own. For this reason, you’re also likely to have access to the best moving supplies and services.

Finally, it’s also the season when other people are likely to celebrate spring and participate in the many activities related to this time of the year. This means that most of the streets will be alive with cars, and you won’t just have to share the pavement with moving trucks but with street vendors, too. That’s why spring is not just the perfect time and season for moving, but also a time when your move is likely to be more seamless.

If you’re planning to move, the best time for that would be the spring season. The reason why spring is a good time for this activity is that the weather is not that hot or cold, and you don’t have to worry about rain or snow as you would in autumn and winter. Aside from the weather, springtime is also when you can learn what kind of flowers are in bloom and are most beautiful.

It’s the perfect time to hire professional moving services and have them help you with the move. The professional moving services are also likely to have the best moving supplies available, so they’re the best place to order the very best in moving boxes, packing materials, and moving tools. You’re also unlikely to feel rushed or pressured to move in the spring. The days are longer, so you have plenty of time to pack, prepare, and move.

Moving out of state in the spring still feels like the best time of the year to relocate and set up your new home in a completely new place.

A guide to getting you on the wheels!!

Figure Out Your Moving Budget

If you’re moving out of state, it’s important to know how much your move will cost you. There’s no sense in putting your life on hold while you wait for your moving budget to cover your expenses. Planning your budget can be difficult, especially if you don’t have any moving expenses in the past to go off of. Keep in mind that moving expenses will vary depending on where you’re moving to. Moving to a sprawling metropolis is likely to cost exponentially more than moving to smaller cities. Planning your moving budget can help you figure out what you can afford to take with you and what you’ll have to leave behind to make your move as affordable as possible. It can also help you understand what expenses you will incur during your trip that might not be covered by your moving budget.

A few simple ways to ensure you have enough money for moving expenses: Run a twelve-month budget for all your expenses. Research the cost of living in the area you’re moving to. Don’t forget about factors like your cell phone bill and internet connection. Consider using a moving estimate calculator to get a real idea of what moving will cost.

Pick a good moving company

When you have identified a few companies to move to, check out their reviews from previous customers. This can include ratings on popular platforms like Google, as well as specific industry resources. To make an informed decision, you can use this to determine which companies have a history of quality service and which are more likely to have complaints, and you can confirm these claims with your research. For example, if a company has more negative reviews than positive, you can glean that they have a lower-than-desirable customer satisfaction rating.

Not every moving company provides printable moving contracts, but most provide a quote on their website that you can print out and keep. This will detail the services they will provide and how much it will cost.

Make sure you’ve turned off the utilities in your old place.

You want to give your old place a nice, long vacate notice. You don’t want to be responsible for a few hundred pounds’ worth of water damage when you move out of state. If you moved into your current place within the past year, you may be able to ask your current utility provider to turn off your service. Otherwise, you’re going to have to call your old provider. Be sure to make a note of the date that you called and write down a brief description of your service. How long does your electric company require to turn off your service? It could be anywhere between a few hours and a few days, depending on the specific terms of your agreement.

Get to know your new place

You may also want to consider doing a web search of local news headlines. Living in a place with a high crime rate, a lack of job opportunities or a high cost of living is going to be more frustrating than if you discover this information before you move. Be sure to take into account the date of the news story, though. For example, a spike in a crime rate might be indicative of a larger problem if it’s recent news, but if it’s from several years ago and there are regular updates that point to continued safety improvements, then it doesn’t have to be a deal killer.

Get a new place to live

Another thing to remember is that there will be a delay between when you find your new place and when it’s available. The easiest way to get around this is to book a short-term rental while you’re in your temporary location.

Finding Temporary Work

After you’ve secured a place to live and know how long you’ll be there, finding temporary work is usually the next step. There are several ways to go about this, but the easiest is to contact your state unemployment office. From there, you can find temporary work in your new state. There are downsides to this, however. First, you’ll likely have to start at the bottom of the totem pole at your new job. This is especially frustrating if you were an office manager, for example, because it may take weeks or months to get back to that level.

Consider Your Financial Health

Finally, when you’re moving across state lines, you have to consider that there are some state-specific benefits of moving from one state to another. You’re going to have to do a little research to see what’s offered to you as an employee of your new state.

Remember, these are just tips and not actual advice on how to move across state lines. There are more suggestions on how to make your biggest move of all a little easier to handle. If you have any other pointers on how to make this process easier, please share!
