How to Help Your Moving Company for a Smooth Moving Day

INVENTORY YOUR BELONGINGS

Prepare an inventory list of your belongings. The purpose of this list is to generally detail the items in your house which are going to be moved. It is a legal document used by your insurance company regarding the items you own. This also makes it easier for the movers to pack, load, and unload your belongings. This list of your belongings should provide the movers with information like the zip code where you live, contact numbers, location of the nearest curb or access road, and any special equipment required.

 

REDUCE THE LOAD

This is a great tip that you can use when you’re planning to move. By reducing the load, you’ll reduce the weight you need to move, which will time and effort for you. You can reduce the load by eliminating the excess things in your closets, like clothes you don’t wear, or shoes that are worn out.

 

LET GO OF SENTIMENTAL STUFF

You should have already separated the most precious possessions that you wish to take with you, but you can still make your move less stressful by letting go of things that are not valuable or meaningful. This will make the movers’ job easier and faster, along with giving you more room to accommodate the things you’ll want or need to bring along. If you still can’t let go, you can donate or sell these kinds of items before your move. Ensure the movers see these things on the day of the move so they can put them where they are supposed to go since they are going out of their way to do it.

PREPARE SUPPLIES

Gather the supplies you may need to assist the movers. This list can contain boxes and boxes, tape, small hand tools, furniture blankets, and cleaning products. Start with smaller and flat items, like pictures, dishes, small table sets, and appliances. Place these items in boxes and label them according to where they go inside your new home. In preparation for the move itself, stock up on the right moving equipment supplies and packing materials. These supplies and materials include a moving dolly, utility dolly, furniture dolly, long-handled furniture moving straps, stretchable or shrink wrap, heavy-duty packing tape, boxes, and boxes’ liners. Along with these supplies, you should also have on hand a pressure washer, hand-held steamer, spray bottles, and cleaning agents.

 

COLLECT NECESSARY PAPERWORK

Before the movers arrive, be ready with the paperwork that the mover’s representative will need to sign. This paperwork includes the Bill of Lading (BOL), a Proof of Service of Notice of Intent to Move (which everybody should receive from the moving company at least 15 days before the move), and other documents needed by the company to transport your belongings.

 

KEEP CHILDREN AT A SAFE DISTANCE

The movers may be carrying heavy objects on their backs and shoulders. You should ask your children and pets to stay out of the moving crew’s way to prevent them from getting injured when the movers walk in and out of the house or from carrying heavy or large items.

 

SECURE YOUR PETS

Keep pets out of the way too. You should confine them to a room or an area of the house where they cannot get into trouble. If you are using pet carriers, be aware that movers might need to move your pet carrier from one location to another. Make sure the carriers are strong and sturdy enough to hold the cats or dogs. Note that movers wouldn’t be able to load water bowls, cat litter boxes, or pet foods for the movers’ vehicle.
