A lot of people have the misconception that there is no way to properly pack when you’re in a rush, but nothing could be further from the truth. If you’re worried about how you’re going to get everything done in time, here are some helpful ideas you can use to pack faster and more efficiently. There is no way to properly pack in a rush, but there are tips you can use that will improve your efficiency and save you some time. These tips will help you pack quickly and effectively, saving you time and stress.
Start Small.
Your packing to-do list is going to be long. Breaking it down into smaller tasks and starting with the smaller boxes first is the best way to feel like you’re making progress. (Plus, it’s the most efficient way to pack your things and not forget about anything!) Pack your clothes, books, and knick-knacks first, and then circle back to fill your kitchen boxes. Once all of your boxes are filled, label them clearly and pack them in your car so they’re ready to go.
Pack Correctly.
This can make it easier for your movers to stack your boxes, and make it easier for them to identify which room your box should be put into! If you’re moving, you should make sure that if you have to check a box that its contents are packed in such a way that they will not shift during transport. You should also make sure that each box is in good structural shape, and not missing any sides or top or bottom. You should also reinforce any box that is likely to get banged up during transport. If you’re using an online moving service, they will pack your boxes for you.
Pack by Room.
This is easier said than done, but if you can, start in one room and fill a box before moving on to the next. While it’s not without its flaws, this method is the best way to give yourself a mental break between rooms and keep you from getting overwhelmed. If you use separate sheets of cardboard so that you can easily lift and move individual boxes, you’ll be able to pack with a greater focus on how you want your space to look after you unpack. Use products that help you pack more efficiently. Use plastic wrap to cover your upholstered furniture. It will help protect it from the elements and make it easier to remove if you decide to sell it down the road. Use protective bags or bins to organise paper products. Use a labelling system that works for you to make sure you know where everything is during the move, and throughout the years.
Discard the Junk.
Give away or throw away everything you don’t need. And then take everything you still have in your house and pack it in a box. We’ve created a checklist to help you get rid of junk you don’t need. Before you even start packing, get organised. Use our packing checklist to make sure you have everything you need to get the job done efficiently. Ask your friends to help you sort out what you’re keeping and what you’re donating. Having an extra set of hands can make the process go much faster. Donate your excess. Many organisations will pick up donations from your home. If they do not come to you, you can take your donations to them. If you have an excess of goods, consider donating to charity even if you’re not moving.
Organize.
Use an inventory list to keep track of what goes where. There’s no substitute for keeping a list. It’s the only way you can be sure that you’re not going to misplace a treasured item. Rather than adding items to a master inventory list, create a packing-specific list with a box number next to each item. Along with the number, label each box with the corresponding letter of the alphabet. This way, you can easily check off items that you’ve already packed.
Move Safely.
Use trash bags to move heavy items. Filling trash bags with heavy items is one of the fastest ways to move heavy furnishings from one room to another. If you don’t want to move items around inside the house, you can place the trash bags on the furniture and then just drag them outside and into the moving truck.
